Finding your perfect wheelchair, ramp or wheelchair van is all about finding the perfect fit for your personal needs and lifestyle. You need to know that your wheelchair has the right dimensions, your ramp fits your transportation needs and your van will safely get you where you need to go every time.

It’s not a one-size-fits-all search – so setting your budget and exploring your financing options shouldn’t be either. Need help finding a wheelchair, van or ramp that fits your budget? Read on for some tips on where to start.

The first step to finding the right service equipment is to have a set budget in mind. Understanding how much you’re willing to spend may help narrow down your options when browsing online inventory or shopping in-person.

When it comes to finding the best rate, keep in mind that the base price of the equipment itself is not the only negotiable rate. In fact, you can get major savings from a variety of places, from veteran benefits to rebates and more.

So how can you pay for your wheelchair van in the most cost-efficient way? Here are a few tips:

Manufacturer rebates and incentives
Many van and ramp manufacturers offer their own rebate or incentive opportunities. Feeling confident in your final decision is incredibly important, so don’t hesitate to ask questions and see if there are any incentives available to make your decision easier. At Ability Center, our Try-Before-You-Buy program gives you the flexibility to rent a van for a weekend and make sure it’s the right fit before you commit. The best part? If you decide to purchase a van from us within 30 days of your rental, we’ll reimburse you up to $500 towards the purchase of your van.

Grant options for veterans
If you’re a veteran, you can most likely qualify to have all or part of your mobility solutions covered. At Ability Center, we utilize the VA’s 4502 or 1394 grants for those who need help buying a wheelchair van or other mobility equipment. In order to obtain benefits, you’ll need to complete the following steps:

  • 1.Get assessed by your physician
  • 2.Bring your VA card when shopping
  • 3.Talk with one of our mobile consultants

We’ll communicate with the VA, physical therapists, hospital case managers and disability driving instructors on your behalf to make sure you get the coverage you need.

If you are permanently disabled, you may qualify for a program through the VA that would ensure you can get a new wheelchair van every two years.

Doctor’s prescription
In some cases, a doctor’s prescription may exempt you from state and local sales tax on your mobility van or equipment. You’ll also need a prescription in order to apply for the previously-discussed manufacturer rebate on your van, so it’s a good idea to talk with your doctor about your equipment needs before you begin shopping.

Vocational rehabilitation or worker’s comp
Depending on your personal needs and circumstances, you may qualify to receive disability-specific coverage on your mobility product under a vocational rehabilitation or worker’s compensation policy. You should check with your employer in either circumstance.

There are many other financing opportunities you may qualify for, including possible income tax credits or state-funded services. To learn more about your financing options and start your search for eligible equipment, contact an Ability Center representative.
